This was a fab order to work on - the combination between one standing doll and one doll on a piece of furniture was a first but I think it turned out great. I am not so fond of doll stands so I incorporated wood into the legs of the standing piece and attached that to an oiled piece of elm. I love making portraits and the more details the better!

Textile Art Doll Caricatures - Three Sisters

This is the doll caricatures of three sisters. I have posted the photos of the originals but the details of the order was simple - Go for it! The difference between a portrait and a caricature is that the latter is a more free interpretation. This is one of the most fun orders I have ever had and I dug deep into my beads, feathers, trimmings and buttons - when I thought one doll was finished I added more jewellery!

Oena

Sometimes you meet people who really inspire. Oena is such a person and this doll I have made for her. It is not a portrait and not a caricature but in this piece I wanted to capture the kindness, compassion, sensitivity and humour that I always feel when I meet her. The fairy wings I made using the same lace material I used making Oena's wedding bouquet and since tea is a favourite of hers, the little porcelain tea set fit perfectly.

I hope she likes it.

Portraits and caricatures

I love making portraits! It's a real challenge to make it look like the original without loosing "my" style. I start with the shape of the head, big nose, high forehead, large ears - what are the features? Then it's the face, positioning the eyes and spending a lot of time drawing the face before I start to embroider - my vanishing pen is a must! Hair and clothes are really important and I always put a lot of energy into finding the right materials for the clothes, it has to be something the person actually has hanging in the closet. If possible I like to add a small detail to show the person's interests, like a bag with some camper van magazines sticking out for the camping enthusiast.

I also do more free interpretations - something I call caricatures. The inspiration can come from an interest or a profession where it is not the features of a specific person I aim to capture but the general feel of the hobby/work/you name it.
